Visitor address and access

The verified address is Am Parkfriedhof 33, 45138 Essen. The cemetery ordinance provides for actual visiting hours to be announced onsite, so this guide does not turn office hours into a supposed permanent gate schedule. Visitor information is available Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 14:00 and by appointment. Those are administration hours, not access times for the grounds.

The city’s largest cemetery

At 40.46 hectares, Parkfriedhof is Essen’s largest cemetery. The city records nearly 29,000 burial spaces. Construction started in autumn 1923 and the first burial took place on 16 December 1924. The older and newer parts each have their own ceremony hall. This division matters when planning a visit because the intended grave and the most practical approach may be some distance apart.
